Spring is here! Old Man Winter Missed the Memo. Today marks the first day of spring and the beginning of rejuvenation, renewal, resurrection, and regrowth. Old man winter is still hanging on here in the Mid-West with temperatures hovering in the teens. It seems a long before anyone starts planting flowers and vegetables in this part of the region.

Springtime is the perfect time to start inspecting your home and making a list of things that needs maintenance and or repairs. Spring is the season to prepare and make the necessary repairs in and around the home. Winter wreaks havoc on homes with the cold temps, snow and salt that cause erosion and wear on your home.

What should you check in and around your home after winter?

Home Exterior Tips

  1. Inspect your roof for missing shingles
  2. Inspect your gutters and down spots for leaks and run off
  3. Low lying areas where water fills next to the foundation should be filled with compacted soil
  4. Check outside hose faucets for freeze damage
  5. Inspect the foundation around your house for cracks or imperfections
  6. Inspect your patio for stains in the wood, discolorations, or warping
  7. Pressure washing the deck and applying water seal
  8. Repair cracked, broken or uneven walkways and driveways
  9. Check trees for potential falling branches and or rot
  10. Remove remaining leaves, remove dead plants
  11. Give the barbeque a thorough cleaning
  12. Check out the lawn mower and do basic lawn mower maintenance
  13. Fertilize the lawn
  14. Trim trees and bushes
  15. Exterminate interior and exterior of your home before the insects hatch gets out of hand

Home Interior Tips

  1. Inspect your attic and basement for discoloration, musty smell, deterioration or dirt stains
  2. Inspect caulking around windows and doors
  3. Replace storm windows and put up screens – if you installed storm windows
  4. Replace torn window screens
  5. Change your ceiling fan’s direction
  6. Have a qualified HVAC contractor give your air-conditioning system a tune-up
  7. Inspect your smoke detectors and replace batteries
  8. Check water heater for leaks and corrosion
  9. Clean or replace your furnace filter
  10. Clean the clothes dryer exhaust duct and space under the dryer
  11. If you have a fireplace now is a good time for a thorough hearth cleaning
  12. Organize and replace winter décor with spring colors and decorations
  13. Spring is traditionally a time for deep cleaning your home
  14. Air out your house by opening up your windows
  15. Hang up some plants. Spring is definitely the time for renewal

At that time, they were not powered by any form of electric motor.     Thank you for sharing the information. Also ask the contractor to inspect the ladders. The last time a contractor came in my house to repair, he forgot to inspect his extension ladder and injured himself.
